You can start meditation and learn the Dharma at the same time if you are a newcomer in Buddhism. One can learn to chant sutra and recite mantra by oneself but when comes to meditation, you must learn from a qualified Shifu or teacher.

There are many benefits if one meditates. One of them is to cultivate samadhi (定)which is my practice. Samadhi will not let me easily affected by things and people around me. My mood will not be easily swing by the happenings around me. I find meditation benefits me a lot.
